Course Description
Contextualized project management training for B.C.'s robust video game development community! For those reskilling from adjacent industries to trained programmers or designers looking to transition into project management roles successfully, this Micro-Credential will provide learners with the industry-identified skills of team management, interpersonal relations, project and task management, reporting, and communication, all within the context of the gaming industry.
This micro-credential will be offered part-time to support working professionals seeking reskilling and upskilling career opportunities.? Classes will combine Zoom sessions and self-paced online in a blended learning model, delivered by instructors and guest speakers with working experience in this field.
Instruction will emphasize practical skills and knowledge development through interactive and collaborative learning activities, including case studies and independent research.
Self-Paced Self-Study
Our asynchronous online learning component provides a comprehensive and well-structured exploration of course modules, allowing participants to delve into the material at their own pace before the live sessions. The content is clearly presented and supplemented by various resources, including articles, videos, and additional materials. Upon completing each self-study module, learners will be thoroughly prepared to actively engage in profound discussions and activities during the subsequent live interactive sessions.
Interactive Zoom Sessions
The live interactive Zoom sessions are a dynamic platform that breathes life into the course content. In these sessions, students will actively interact with the instructor, fellow participants, and the course material through discussions, group activities, case studies, and reflective exercises. This is where theory seamlessly merges with practical application, fostering an environment where students are encouraged to share their insights, pose questions, and challenge preconceived notions. Learners are expected to attend all of the online interactive Zoom classes.
Course Outline
Module 1 Video Game Industry Landscape
Learners will navigate the organization and interdependencies of people and processes in video game production. Through guest speakers, case studies, and independent research, you will explore a variety of factors, including studio business models and game platforms and delivery models, that influence project management in video games. Learners will also examine the skills, characteristics, and attitudes that help foster a successful career in the project management stream in the video game industry.
Module 2 Project Management: Video Game Industry
In this module learners will deepen your understanding of video game production, using various tools and approaches to project manage a selection of case studies. You will hone their scheduling, documentation, and presentation skills while considering diverse audiences and stakeholders.
Module 3 Communication & Leadership Skills: Video Game Industry
Learners will practice skillful communication in project management in the context of video games. You will develop key leadership and mentorship competencies to be a strong part of the project manager/producer stream, contribute to a healthy workplace environment, and support and motivate others across the organization.
Module 4 Workforce Integration: Video Game Industry
In this module, you will synthesize their knowledge and skills in Project management for Video Games, incorporating new understanding into your practice and preparing for the job market.

This program is well-suited for people with some project management or video game industry experience, but this is not required.
This course includes 14 instructor-led classes (online on Zoom) and self-paced online learning modules (approximately 2 hours per week).
