TTMC 550G - Coatings 101
Course Description
Coatings 101 is a simplified course designed for anyone who needs a basic understanding of coatings technology. The course provides theoretical knowledge and practical application of protective coatings information. The course uses case studies which challenge participants to make practical use of the lecture material. Course topics include Coatings Technology, Surface Preparation, Coating Specifications, Coating Selection, and Contractor Selection.
Coatings 101 is designed for everyone involved in the coatings industry at any level. The lectures in combination with interactive activities allow the participants to apply the theoretical principals in a practical situation.
Learner Outcomes
- To understand the significant difference between "Paint" and "Protective Coatings".
- To be able to explain the difference (advantages, disadvantages and curing mechanisms) between various generic coating types.
- To be able to explain various surface preparation requirements and how to determine if the surface preparation meets the specific quality standard.
- To understand the purpose and become familiar with basic coating inspection tools.
- To understand the basic of a good coating specification.
Notes
Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunches, as there are no food services onsite at the Camosun Coastal Centre. A nearby plaza offers several food options within a short driving distance.
About the Instructor
Gil’s 50-year career in the coatings industry has qualified him to offer practical consultancy to his clients. An apprenticeship in the Painting and Decorating trade led to Gil’s achieving Journeyman status in 1977, Red-Seal Certification in 1986, NACE Level 3 Certified Coating Inspector in 1997, SSPC Protective Coating Specialist in 2002, and NACE Protective Coating Specialist in 2004. Gil has worked as an Industrial Coating Applicator, Foreman, Superintendent, Estimator, Technical Sales Representative, Project Manager, Inspector, Coatings Division Manager, Instructor, Director of Training, Quality Manager, Quality Auditor, and Expert Witness.
Commencing in 1997 Gil spent 22 years as Lead Instructor in the Legacy NACE (now AMPP) Coating Inspector Training Program (CIP). This opportunity permitted Gil to travel internationally to 16 different countries teaching others and sharing his considerable experience. Gil’s unique combination of technical training, practical experience, and ability to teach has given him the opportunity to effectively liaise at all levels of the coatings industry.
