Course Description

Ever thought about being your own boss?  Whether you are thinking about selling your jewelry, accepting consulting work, or taking private clients as a counsellor or personal trainer, this course will help you to understand your needs, opportunities, and responsibilities as a small business owner.  You’ll learn how to set up a new business, how to get the word out about your product, and how to manage your time and finances as work comes in. Set your new venture up for success with this micro-credential. 

Learner Outcomes

Module 1: How to Start Your Own Business
Transform opportunities into successful business ventures. Gain the tools, guidelines, and skills necessary for small business ownership. Key topics include generating business ideas, conducting market research, developing marketing and sales strategies, writing proposals, exploring financing options, managing human resources, and effectively running your business post-launch. The course also includes guidance on completing a business plan.

Module 2: Financial Skills for Managers
Master the essentials of planning, organizing, and leading to become a more efficient, effective, and successful manager. Focus on achieving organizational goals by optimizing the productivity of your most valuable asset your staff at every level of the organization. Assess your managerial strengths and identify ways to improve your skills and effectiveness.

Module 3: Human Resources Management
Delve into the theory and practice of human resources management while developing the essential functions and competencies required of HR practitioners and supervisors. Learn about the employee life cycle, including job design, recruitment, onboarding, training, career development, and disciplinary processes.

Instructor Bio

Jerry is an entrepreneur and hands-on senior executive with over 40 years of experience in start-ups, project management, management consulting, and business systems integration, as well as experience in executive management and in navigating change in complex environments.  He has worked in every stage of the life cycle of a large number of businesses:  from the conception of new ideas, through to the start-up process, maintaining businesses through times of change, and ultimately to the successful sale or wind-down of the business.  
 
Jerry’s broad experience in successful businesses will help students to identify their personal strengths and strategize accordingly, while his knowledge of the reasons why businesses can fail to thrive gives weight to his advice in helping students avoid common pitfalls. Jerry is passionate about the benefits that BC’s 188,000 small businesses bring to our community and about helping leaners who are stepping into the world of business to achieve their goals.
