MCRO 304V - Cultural Safety Training for Healthcare Workers Micro-credential

Course Description

This 32-hour micro-credential provides an opportunity for learners to explore key aspects of cultural safety and addressing anti-Indigenous racism. The micro-credential is set over 9 weeks with 10 hrs online study and two days of on-campus learning. The two days on campus will be a hands-on immersive process exploring Indigenous peoples of Southern Vancouver Island and Community Engagement. This course is for anyone working in health care who want to enhance their knowledge, awareness, and skills for serving Indigenous people.

Participants in this course are introduced to key aspects of cultural safety and addressing anti-Indigenous racism. The curriculum and learning activities have been designed to help participants strengthen their knowledge, awareness, and skills for working with and providing service to Indigenous people and communities, work more safely and effectively with Indigenous people, and begin considering their role in correcting, rebuilding and transforming systems to uproot Indigenous-specific racism.  Core ICS Health is among the courses recommended by BCCNM in fulfilling their practice standard for Indigenous cultural safety.

San’yas means ‘way of knowing’ in Kwak’wala the language of the Kwakwaka’wakw Peoples. Kwak’wala is the language of the San’yas founder and creator, Dr. Cheryl Ward. The work at San’yas is vital for all Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in Canada. Focusing on uprooting anti-Indigenous racism and promoting cultural safety for Indigenous people. These efforts provide a foundation necessary for reconciliation between Indigenous and Settler peoples across Canada. 

This Micro-Credential contains a certification from San’yas Anti-racisim Indigenous Cultural Safety Training Program and is administered by the Indigenous Health Department at the Provincial Health Services Authority in Vancouver, British Columbia. • Enhancing Indigenous Cultural Safety in healthcare
