Course Description

Gifted leaders recognize the need to continually develop their skills - a life-long commitment to self-improvement that is crucial to their success. In this Micro-Credential, learners will refine and gain new skills while expanding their professional networks and gaining valuable insights from inspiring leaders in the community. 
 
The Leadership Micro-Credential is designed for all levels of leadership, from developing leaders working towards career advancement to established leaders with a desire to hone their skills in a changing workplace. This course is suitable for leaders in the public, private, non-profit or academic sectors. 
 
Wherever participants may be located, the online Leadership Micro-Credential will help build the skills and develop the insights needed for effective leadership and career success. Learners will gain the tools to identify their own strengths and weaknesses and access resources to grow and make a positive impact. Peer collaboration and practical and theoretical guidance form the foundation of the course, and participants are encouraged to share their own authentic leadership values and experiences leading people. Major topics include communication, well-being practices, change management, equity, diversity and inclusion, and leading a remote workforce. 

Course Outline

The online Micro-Credential course in leadership offers a flexible learning experience, combining synchronous and asynchronous elements. Here's what you can expect:

Asynchronous Self-Study

Our asynchronous online learning component provides a comprehensive and well-structured exploration of course modules, allowing participants to delve into the material at their own pace before the live sessions. The content is presented with clarity, supplemented by a variety of resources, including articles, videos, and additional materials. Upon completing each self-study module, learners will be thoroughly prepared to actively engage in profound discussions and activities during the subsequent live interactive sessions.

Interactive Zoom Sessions

The live interactive Zoom sessions serve as a dynamic platform that breathes life into the course content. In these sessions, students will actively interact with the instructor, fellow participants, and the course material through discussions, group activities, case studies, and reflective exercises. This is where theory seamlessly merges with practical application, fostering an environment where students are encouraged to share their insights, pose questions, and challenge preconceived notions. Active participation in these real-time sessions not only refines students' comprehension of the weekly topic but also cultivates critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving skills, which can be directly applied to professional practice.

Students are expected to attend all of the online interactive zoom classes.

Learner Outcomes

This Micro-Credential is designed as a cohort-based, part-time and intensive program that includes online instructor-led sessions coupled with self-study. This credential is seminar-based and not graded. Session topics include: 

  • Leadership Overview: articulate the term "leadership"
  • Leadership Values: identify leadership values
  • Leading people: adopt a range of strategies to lead people
  • Well-being Practices to Guide Leaders: identify and use a range of wellbeing practices for leaders
  • Leadership for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: understand leadership for equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Leaders Performing Under Pressure: understand effective leadership while working under pressure
  • Leading Change: identify the elements of leading change
  • Leading a Hybrid Workforce: identify the benefits and challenges of a hybrid workforce
  • Leadership Presentations: present a summary of learning

Admission Requirements

This program has no prerequisites. A commitment to participate in all sessions is highly encouraged for a successful outcome. You are recommended to be an emerging leader, a current leader or an established leader. An Emerging Leader may already supervise individual projects or people as a Team Leader or an entry-level to mid-level Supervisor, Manager, or Administrator. At this career stage, an Emerging Leader is typically working to develop all aspects of leadership skills.
